I am OBSESSED WITH TACOS… I mean obviously, who isn’t? During the pandemic I made it my mission to find the best homemade tortilla recipe to elevate my tacos. They are fresh, warm and will make all your taco taste BETTER. A lot of people use lard in their tacos but that’s not very vegan friendly so these are my olive oil, vegan tacos!
- 3 cups of all-purpose flour
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/3 cup oil (I used avocado or olive)
Step 1: Make the Dough!
Making the dough is really, really easy! Literally just through all the ingredients will end up in the bowl. I start by whisking together the flour, salt and baking powder (this helps them combine really easy.
Next I add the oil and work it with my hands (or my dough hook) so that it kind of looks like a crumble topping.
Finally I add the water, 1 cup and I make it warm. Once I add the water I work the dough into a ball. I wil work with the dough ball until it is smooth an elastic (about 2 minutes) or I run my stand mixer until the dough ball is smooth and pulls away from the bowl.
Then I let the dough rest for about 15 minutes – you can have it rest for up to an hour (depending on what else you are working on 😉)
Then it is time to divide the dough – everyone always asks me how many dough balls there should be and the truth is the dough ball size depends on the number of tortillas you want to make! For me this dough ball makes 10 to 12.
Next, it is time to flatten the dough. I take a dough ball and flatten it into a little tortilla pancake. Then it is time to thin it out! You will see in the video that you can use a tortilla press or a rolling pin (whichever works for you)! I am a fan of the rolling pin myself.
Once the tortillas are rolled, I store them on a plate- with a sprinkle of flour in between each layer so they do not stick! When they are all made it is then time to cook them!
Cooking the tortillas is easy! I like to fry mine up with a dash of oil in my cast iron pan. You should keep the pan medium/hot and flip them when bubbles appear. We want some small little brown spots on the tortillas!
