Bread and baking is a hobby that everyone adopted during COVID. Bagels became a comfort food for me, so of course I started looking for easy bagel recipes.
These bagel recipes are delicious, easy and homemade. Trust me there is nothing like a fresh from the oven warm bagel!
The basic bagels are made with just self rising flour and vegan yogurt (I like presidents choice vegan coconut yogurt – it is the closet to greek. But you can also make your own vegan yogurt).
- 1 cup self rising flour
- 1 cup vegan thick yogurt
Optional Ingredients (toppings)
- Non-dairy milk (for the vegan version of an egg wash).
- Garlic salt
- Bagel seasoning
- Cinnamon Sugar Mix
- Jalapeno lime seasoning
- ANY SEASONING YOU WANT.
Preheat your oven to 400F.
This is everything I use to make my bagels. As you can see I have my self rising flour, vegan Greek style yogurt and my toppings. This time I decided to make Jalapeno Lime, Cinnamon Sugar and Everything bagels.
Make the Dough
I like to make my dough in my stand mixer. But you can roll the dough by hand too. In my stand mixer I put 1 cup flour and 1 cup yogurt. I mix it on low with the dough hook. The dough should start to pull away from the bowl. This means about 30 seconds of it running. If you are mixing it by hand knead the dough for 30 seconds.
Shape the Bagels
Once the dough is done divide the dough into 4 equal balls. Now you can make the bagel shape in 1 of two ways.
- Poke a hole in the middle of each ball and gently stretch it to the size of the bagel you would like.
- Roll the dough into a very thick snake and press the ends together.
Let Them Rest
Now we want them to rise. So I place them on a cookie sheet and let them rise for 15 to 20 minutes. Keep them spread out with inches in between so they do not join together. Since my house is cold. I like to proof mine in my over for 15 minutes to help them rise.
Top them Off
Just before they go into the over I add my toppings – now toppings are a choice. Some people love plain bagels (for my boyfriend all he wants is a sesame seed bagel. This time I decided to make 2 everything garlic bagels and 2 cinnamon sugar bagels.
I like to brush my bagels with slightly warmed non-dairy milk then sprinkle with the toppings.
Bake them Golden
Now it is time to BAKE! I bake mine for approximately 24 minutes at 400F. I turn them halfway through so they cook evenly. Since I like my bagels extra golden. I turn up the temperature to 450F and give them an extra 3 minutes (27 minutes total).
